The first five years of a child's life represent a period of extraordinary brain development and physical growth. Tracking key developmental milestones—how your child plays, learns, speaks, acts, and moves—helps ensure they are developing at a healthy pace. At Dr. Akshata Chaudhari's ChildCare Clinic in Goregaon West, routine developmental assessments are an integral part of every well-child check-up.

1. Milestone Stages: Birth to 5 Years

3 Months Milestone

  • Motor: Lifts head and chest when lying on stomach; holds head steady when upright.
  • Speech & Social: Smiles at caregivers, makes cooing sounds, follows objects with eyes.

6 Months Milestone

  • Motor: Rolls from front to back and back to front; sits with minimal support.
  • Speech & Social: Responds to own name, babbles consonant sounds (ba-ba, ma-ma).

12 Months (1 Year) Milestone

  • Motor: Pulls up to stand, cruises along furniture, may take first independent steps.
  • Speech & Social: Says 1-2 meaningful words ("Mama", "Dada"), waves goodbye, points at objects.

2 Years Milestone

  • Motor: Runs smoothly, kicks a ball, climbs stairs with support.
  • Speech & Social: Uses 2-word phrases ("want milk"), imitates adult actions, points to pictures in books.

3 to 5 Years Milestone

  • Motor: Hops on one foot, uses safety scissors, dresses self with minor assistance.
  • Speech & Social: Speaks in full sentences, asks "Why?" questions, plays cooperatively with peers.

2. Red Flags for Developmental Delay

Consult Your Pediatrician If Your Child:

  • Does not make eye contact or smile by 3-4 months.
  • Cannot sit unsupported by 9 months.
  • Does not babble or respond to sounds by 12 months.
  • Has no single words by 18 months or no 2-word phrases by 24 months.
  • Loses any previously acquired speech or motor skills at any age.

3. Importance of Routine Growth Tracking

During routine OPD consultations, we track your child's height, weight, and head circumference on standard WHO growth charts. Early detection of growth faltering or developmental lag allows for timely nutritional adjustments, physiotherapy, or speech therapy.
